What is AEO?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) explained: optimising content for AI answer systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Citability, direct answers, E-E-A-T, and best practices.

AEO in brief

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) means optimising digital content for AI answer systems—platforms such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google AI Overviews. Unlike classic SEO, which targets rankings in search results, AEO aims to be cited and linked as a trustworthy source in AI-generated answers. AEO complements search engine optimisation and grows in importance as more people use AI assistants to search.

The difference between AEO and SEO

SEO optimises for classic search engines such as Google—the goal is high rankings and clicks to your site. AEO optimises for answer engines: systems that answer user questions directly by summarising web content and naming sources. Success metrics differ—SEO tracks rankings and traffic; AEO tracks citations and mentions in AI answers.

  • SEO:Focus on rankings, backlinks, and domain authority. Long, comprehensive articles. Users click through to pages.
  • AEO:Focus on citability. Direct answers (40–60 words), semantic clarity, structured data. AI systems pick trustworthy sources—E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) is central.
  • Combined:AEO does not replace SEO—they complement each other. A combined strategy tracks both classic rankings and AI citations and lays technical foundations (sitemap, llms.txt) for both worlds.

AEO tactics and best practices

AEO spans technical, content, and authority measures. Content should be structured so AI systems can process, summarise, and cite it easily.

  • llms.txt:A file at the domain root (e.g. /llms.txt) that gives AI systems a clear overview of site content—in a human- and machine-readable format. Like robots.txt at the root, but for content overview rather than crawl rules.
  • Schema markup:Structured data (JSON-LD) such as FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Organization—helps crawlers and AI systems understand content. For AEO it is central, not optional.
  • Direct answers:Under each heading or question, a concise answer (40–60 words) at the start of the section. Clear, factual, quotable.
  • E-E-A-T:Experience, expertise, authority, and trust—through authors, citations, internal links, and external recognition. AI systems favour established, credible sources.
  • Question-led structure:Phrase headings as natural user questions to align with queries sent to AI assistants. Ties to GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)—both target AI visibility.

Target platforms: which answer engines should you optimise for?

Different AI platforms use different crawl patterns, ranking signals, and audiences. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude differ—a solid AEO baseline (structure, E-E-A-T, schema) helps everywhere; you can add platform-specific tweaks.

  • Google AI Overviews: Appears for part of desktop searches. Optimise for featured snippets, local authority, Core Web Vitals. Schema and mobile optimisation matter.
  • ChatGPT: Uses comprehensive, well-structured content. Internal linking, hierarchy, clear facts. Crawl cycles are often on the order of days.
  • Perplexity: Cites community sources such as Reddit heavily. Fresh content and engagement in forums can matter. Update frequency is important.
  • Claude: Favoured by technically minded users. Technical depth, accuracy, code samples, and detailed explanations can help.

Why AEO matters

More and more searches end without a click—users get answers in the SERP or from AI assistants. AI-driven traffic can convert better than classic organic traffic. Acting on AEO now builds authority in AI knowledge bases—experts describe a limited window before algorithms mature and become harder to influence.

  • Zero-click searches: A large share of searches end without a click to external sites—answers come from AI Overviews, featured snippets, or assistants.
  • AI search is growing: Use of ChatGPT search and similar services is rising fast. If you are invisible, you lose reach.
  • Early movers: Those who establish AEO early benefit from entrenched authority in AI systems—later competitors have a harder time catching up.

AEO—summary

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) adds the dimension of AI answer systems to classic SEO. The goal is to be cited as a trustworthy source in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or Claude. Core measures: direct answers, schema markup, E-E-A-T, llms.txt, question-led structure. AEO does not replace SEO—together they secure visibility in classic search and AI-driven information retrieval.

IVIS MEDIA develops SEO strategies that combine classic optimisation with AEO and GEO—from content to technical implementation. With our free AI readiness check we review your site for AEO readiness. More about our Berlin SEO agency. Request a free AI readiness check for your website.

Frequently asked questions about AEO

+What is AEO?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) means optimising digital content for AI answer systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google AI Overviews. The goal is to be cited and linked as a trustworthy source in AI-generated answers. AEO complements classic SEO and focuses on citability, direct answers, and E-E-A-T.

+What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO optimises for search rankings and clicks to your site. AEO optimises for being cited as a source in AI answers. Metrics differ: SEO tracks rankings and traffic; AEO tracks citations and mentions. They complement each other—a combined strategy makes sense.

+What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) both target AI visibility—ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews. The terms are sometimes used interchangeably. AEO stresses “answer” systems; GEO stresses “generative” engines. The tactics (structure, E-E-A-T, schema) are very similar.

+What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a file at the domain root (e.g. /llms.txt) that gives AI systems a clear overview of site content. Like robots.txt at the root, but for an LLM-oriented content map instead of crawl rules. Part of the technical AEO baseline.

+What measures belong to AEO?

Technical: llms.txt, schema markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Organization). Content: direct answers (40–60 words), question-led headings, clear structure. Authority: strengthen E-E-A-T—expertise, sources, visible authors.

+Which platforms do you optimise for with AEO?

Primarily ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews. Each has specific crawl and ranking signals. A solid AEO baseline (structure, schema, E-E-A-T) helps everywhere; platform-specific tuning can make sense depending on goals.
