What are Core Web Vitals?

LCP, INP and CLS explained: what they tell you about real website experiences, how to measure them and where to improve.

Core Web Vitals in brief

Core Web Vitals are three measures of real website experience. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) tracks when the largest visible content element renders, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) tracks responsiveness to user input, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) tracks unexpected visual movement. The recommended good thresholds are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds and CLS at or below 0.1, assessed at the 75th percentile of page views, separately for mobile and desktop.

These metrics help teams fix specific problems instead of chasing a generic speed score. Google recommends good Core Web Vitals for search and user experience, but does not promise a particular ranking. See Google Search Central for that distinction and web.dev for metric definitions and thresholds.

What do LCP, INP and CLS measure?

LCP measures when the largest image or text block in the viewport has rendered. Slow server responses, late-discovered hero images and render-blocking resources can delay it. INP considers clicks, taps and keyboard input throughout a visit. It measures the delay until the next possible visual feedback, not until a later network request completes. CLS measures unexpected layout shifts, such as images appearing without reserved space.

The metrics cover different failures. A page may look ready quickly while its navigation still responds slowly; a responsive shop can still jump when banners load. Examine important page templates and real interactions separately rather than judging the first screen alone. The web.dev INP definition also explains how exceptionally interaction-heavy pages are handled.

  • LCP:Loading performance of the largest visible content element; good at 2.5 seconds or less.
  • INP:Responsiveness from user input to the next visual update; good at 200 milliseconds or less.
  • CLS:Unexpected layout movement; good at 0.1 or less.

How do you measure Core Web Vitals?

Start with field data. The Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console groups affected URLs. PageSpeed Insights can show real-world measurements from the Chrome UX Report (CrUX) where sufficient data exists, alongside lab diagnostics. CrUX does not represent every URL or browser; missing field data is not evidence that a page is fast or slow.

Developers can then reproduce common journeys in Chrome DevTools: opening navigation, applying filters or adding an item to a basket. A Lighthouse run simulates a load but cannot capture a complete INP over a real visit; Total Blocking Time can offer a lab diagnostic clue. Field data identifies a problem, lab work helps explain it, and subsequent field measurements test whether the change helped. The CrUX overview describes the dataset's limits.

How to improve Core Web Vitals

For poor LCP, identify the actual largest element first. If it is a hero image, right-sized assets, early discovery and prompt delivery are sensible starting points. For INP, find the actual slow interaction. Unnecessary JavaScript and long main-thread tasks can delay input; expensive handlers or rendering work can postpone the next frame. web.dev's INP guidance separates input delay, processing time and presentation delay so teams can target the cause.

For CLS, reserve space for images and embeds, avoid inserting content above existing elements, and test font swaps. Prioritise frequently used templates and important business journeys. Record what changed, the affected group of pages and before-and-after evidence. One lab score cannot describe every visitor's experience.

Why do these metrics matter for SEO?

Google recommends good Core Web Vitals as part of a strong page experience. They are not a shortcut to rankings and cannot replace helpful content or technical discoverability. A high Lighthouse score also does not establish that real customers can interact smoothly. Our SEO glossary entry explains how technical quality sits alongside search intent and useful information.

Forms and online shops deserve attention to both responsiveness during common actions and stable layouts. Interaction quality matters as much as initial rendering. A front-end application can appear complete while still responding poorly during load. Realistic mobile testing helps expose the difference.

Core Web Vitals: the takeaway

LCP, INP and CLS quantify three separate kinds of friction. Check field data, locate the specific element or slow interaction, then test a targeted change. Thresholds apply at the 75th percentile, not as a promise about every single visit.

IVIS MEDIA combines web development with experience-led performance analysis. For a relaunch or optimisation project, Core Web Vitals can become measurable quality targets for the pages and user journeys that matter most.
