What happens in the week of 24 August
ChatGPT advertising expands to 31 European markets in the week beginning 24 August 2026. OpenAI names Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The announcement landed on 19 August, six months after ads testing started in the United States on 9 February 2026.
For Switzerland the same rule applies as for the EEA: personalised ads stay off at launch, and delivery follows the current conversation context. OpenAI itself says "next week" and does not give a single calendar day.

In short
- Expansion to 31 European markets; Germany, Austria and Switzerland named
- Ads on Free and Go, not on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu
- Placement below the finished answer, labelled sponsored
- No personalised ads in the EEA or Switzerland at launch
Who sees the ads
Ads in ChatGPT mainly reach people on the free or low-cost plan. Ads in ChatGPT are therefore a B2C and private-research channel today, not a typical business-workspace placement.
| Plan | Ads | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Free | yes | An ad-free option exists, with lower message limits. |
| Go | yes | Same ad channel as Free. |
| Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu | no | Ad-free on the subscription. Full limits without ads via Plus or Pro. |
- No ads for accounts under 18
- No ads in temporary chats
- No ads in sensitive or regulated contexts: physical health, mental health, politics
- Political advertising is currently not allowed at all
Anyone working on Plus, Pro or Business often sees nothing during the working day. The channel mainly hits consumers and people comparing options in private. That changes B2B reach expectations.
What a ChatGPT ad looks like
ChatGPT ads sit below the end of an answer. They are visually separated and labelled sponsored. One reply can carry one or more ads, including from several advertisers.
- Company name the name of the advertiser.
- Favicon the small logo next to the name.
- Title the ad headline.
- Ad copy the description under the title.
- Image the creative.
- Landing page the destination after the click.
People can hide an ad, report it, see information about it, or "Ask ChatGPT". Ads do not change ChatGPT's answers. The ad system and the chat model run separately; advertisers cannot rank or alter replies.
No personalised ads in the EEA or Switzerland
OpenAI ads in Europe launch without the personalisation available in some other markets. The GDPR applies in the EEA, and Switzerland has its own data protection act. Delivery therefore follows the current conversation plus basic signals such as rough location and language. That puts all of DACH under the same restriction at launch, even though Switzerland is not an EEA member.
What is not available in DACH at launch
- No personalised ads based on prior ChatGPT use
- No audience data as the main targeting control
- No political advertising
What the ads match against
- Current conversation context
- Rough location and language
- Context hints, ad copy and landing-page content
Single ads can be controlled from that ad’s menu. Account-level controls sit under Settings, then ad settings. OpenAI may still change the exact interface; the split between answer and ad stays the rule.
What this means for companies in DACH
For ChatGPT ads in Germany the same pattern holds in Austria and Switzerland: copy and the landing page are the targeting. Without personalisation, you need text that fits the conversation and destination pages OpenAI can crawl. That is content and web work, not classic keyword bidding. Anyone who prepares this now enters a thinly contested auction and collects data that latecomers will pay more for.
- Make landing pages crawlable The destination has to be reachable for OpenAI. JavaScript traps, login walls and blocked crawlers stop delivery.
- Allow the ads crawler OAI-AdsBot must be allowed; OAI-SearchBot is recommended. Blocking the bot in robots.txt, a WAF or bot protection means you cannot advertise.
- Settle measurement internally Without personalisation, familiar audience signals are missing. Decide which clicks, enquiries or purchases you will attribute before the first euro is spent.
- Build copy variants in breadth Context hints, titles and ad copy replace keywords. Several clear variants for real conversation situations help more than a single line of copy.

How ads can be booked now
ChatGPT ads and OpenAI ads do not run as self-serve in DACH at launch. Advertisers book through the OpenAI Ads Solutions team, agency partners and technology partners. Ads Manager as self-serve comes later. Anyone who waits for that starts the same learning phase later, at higher bids.
DACH status · as of 19 August 2026
- Delivery to ChatGPT users: announced for the week beginning 24 August 2026
- Self-serve via OpenAI Ads Manager: later
- Booking via partners: yes, through OpenAI Ads Solutions, agency and technology partners
We will update this box once OpenAI confirms delivery or self-serve for DE, AT and CH.
Where this leaves us
The channel is new, reach sits on Free and Go, and DACH launches without personalisation. Anyone who wants to advertise steers through conversation context, ad copy and the landing page. Anyone who blocks the bot is out. So the question is not whether ChatGPT ads are worthwhile. The question is whether your website allows them at all.
Whether AI belongs in a company at all is a wider question than one ad format. More on that: Using AI in your enterprise. For visibility in ChatGPT and other AI answers, start with the GEO agency or online marketing. And if you want to run ads in ChatGPT, head to our page Advertising in ChatGPT.
